San Martin de Porres

San Martin was born in 1589, the illegimate son of a freed woman of Panama, probably a Negro but possibly of Indian stock and a  Spanish grandee of Lima, Peru. He inherited the dark complexion of his mother and was treated as a social outcast. Reared in poverty, he was locked into a low leverl of Lima's society.

At 12, his mother apprenticed him to a barber-surgeon. He learned how to care for the wounds and pepare and administer medicines.

After years in his medical apostolate, he applied to the dominicans to be a "lay helper", not feeling himself worthy to be a religious brother.  He was invited into the religious profession nine years later where he was dedicated to nursing the sick and caring for the poor regardless of color, race, or status. He founded an orphanage and was a formidable fundraiser. He was called "Brother Broom" by the members of the religious commmunity because he was always doing the lowest jobs, was considered a half-breed by society and called himself "poor slave".  He died in 1639 at the age of 60.  San Martin has much to teach the modern world.  Even with his handicapped by a life of poverty and total lack of formal education, he became a great spiritual leader.  Engaged in a lifelong effort to overcome the tensions and hatred which racial prejudice had created in his society, he drew his power from Christ and wielded it greatly. It has the power of love.

San Martín nació en 1589, hijo ilegítimo de una mujer liberada de Panamá, probablemente negra, pero posiblemente de una población indígena, con un español de Lima, Perú. Él heredó la tez oscura de su madre y fue tratado como una paria social. Arrojado en la pobreza, estaba encerrado en un reducido grupo de la sociedad de Lima.
A los 12 años, su madre le hizo un aprendiz de cirujano barbero. Aprendió cómo cuidar las heridas y administrar medicinas.
Después de años en su apostolado médico, aplicó a los dominicanos para ser un "ayudante laico", sin sentirse digno de ser un hermano religioso. Fundó un orfanato y fue un formidable recaudador de fondos. Fue llamado "Hermano Escoba" por los miembros de la comunidad religiosa porque siempre estaba haciendo los trabajos más bajos, la sociedad le llamaba mestizo y se llamaba a si mismo "esclavo pobre". Murió en 1639 a la edad de 60 años.  
Incluso con su vida de pobreza y falta total de educación formal, se convirtió en un gran líder espiritual. Comprometido en un esfuerzo de vida para superar las tensiones y el odio que el prejuicio racial creado en su sociedad, sacó su poder de Cristo y lo manejó en gran medida. Fue el poder del amor.
